Composer Diversity

The NFHS has partnered with the Institute of Composer Diversity to produce National and State Repertoire Reports which examine the diversity of composers represented in music lists recommended, prescribed, or required by states during the 2022-2023 school year.

This project focused on three primary categories of composers who have been historically marginalized and excluded: 1) women composers and 2) composers of color, as well as the music of 3) living composers from all ethnicities and gender identities.

Nearly 85,000 works were submitted by state associations required/recommended band, orchestra, and choral repertoires. View the full reports below.
