Scenic Artist

A Scenic Artist is a skilled professional responsible for creating visually captivating scenery and backdrops for theatrical productions, film sets, theme parks, and other entertainment venues. They possess a combination of artistic talent, technical skills, and creativity to bring concepts to life through paint, textures, and other scenic elements.

Entry-Level

Role: Apprentice Scenic Artist

Responsibilities: Learning basic painting techniques and color mixing, helping the team in the construction and installation of scenic elements, familiarizing with safety protocols and equipment usage.

Role: Junior Scenic Artist

Responsibilities: Executing scenic designs under the supervision of lead scenic artists, interpreting concepts and translate them into visual representations, developing proficiency in various painting techniques such as faux finishes, aging, and texturing, participating in the planning and execution of large-scale projects.

Role: Senior Scenic Artist or Lead Painter

Responsibilities: Overseeing the entire scenic painting process from concept to completion, teaching junior artists and providing guidance on technique and artistic development, working closely with production designers and directors to achieve artistic vision.


Artistic Ability: Proficiency in painting and drawing with an eye for detail and composition

Technical Skills: Knowledge of various painting techniques, color theory, and materials

Teamwork: Strong communication and teamwork skills to work effectively with designers, directors, and fellow artists

Adaptability: Willingness to work in diverse environments and adapt to changing project requirements

Formal Education: Many scenic artists have a background in fine arts, theater, or related fields. A bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts or Theater Arts can provide a strong foundation

Apprenticeships/Internships: Gaining practical experience through apprenticeships, internships, or assistant positions with established scenic artists or theater companies

Continuing Education: Pursuing workshops or courses in scenic painting techniques and theatrical design can enhance skills and knowledge

Low: $30,000 – $40,000 per year

Median: $40,000 – $50,000 per year

High: $50,000 – $60,000+ per year

Median Pay:

Low: $45,000 – $55,000 per year

Median: $55,000 – $65,000 per year

High: $65,000 – $75,000+ per year

High Pay:

Low: $60,000 – $70,000 per year

Median: $70,000 – $80,000 per year

High: $80,000 – $90,000+ per year
