Entry-Level

Role: Makeup Assistant

Responsibilities: Learning from senior makeup artists in preparing actors for performances, organizing and maintaining makeup supplies and equipment, familiarizing with stage lighting and its impact on makeup.

Role: Junior Makeup Artist

Responsibilities: Applying makeup to actors according to the director’s vision and character requirements, creating special effects makeup for scenes requiring wounds, aging, or fantasy characters, assisting in makeup trials and adjustments during rehearsals.

Role: Senior Makeup Artist or Head of Makeup Department

Responsibilities: Designing and executing complex makeup designs for lead characters or elaborate productions, managing budgets, procurement of makeup supplies, and scheduling for the makeup department, providing guidance and training to junior makeup artists.


Creative Vision: Ability to conceptualize and execute diverse makeup designs that enhance characters and contribute to the overall storytelling

Attention to Detail: Precision in application techniques to ensure makeup withstands stage lighting and long performances

Teamwork: Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with directors, costume designers, and other production staff

Special Effects Expertise: Proficiency in creating realistic special effects makeup for various stage requirements

Makeup Artistry Certification: Completion of a recognized makeup artistry program focusing on theatrical makeup techniques

Apprenticeships/Internships: Gaining practical experience through apprenticeships or internships with theatre companies or makeup studios

Continuing Education: Participating in workshops, seminars, or advanced training courses to refine skills and stay updated with industry trends

Low: $25,000 – $30,000 per year

Median: $30,000 – $40,000 per year

High: $40,000 – $50,000 per year

Median Pay:

Low: $35,000 – $45,000 per year

Median: $45,000 – $55,000 per year

High: $55,000 – $70,000+ per year

High Pay:
