Building a Career in Music

Objective: To enable students to map out their potential career paths in the music industry, including education and skill development. 

Materials: 

  • Career mapping templates 
  • Internet access for researching educational paths 
  • Note-taking materials 

Lesson Outline: 

  1. Career Mapping Workshop 
  • Introduce the concept of career mapping and its benefits. 
  • Provide templates and examples, then assist students as they begin mapping their own music career paths using Berklee College of Music – Career Development Center – Offers resources for career planning in music, including advice on education and skill development. Berklee Career Center website 
  • NFHS  – Provides resources for students interested in music careers, including guides on educational pathways and certification. NFHS Careers  
  •  
  1. Skills and Education Workshop 
  • Discuss the importance of specific skills and educational paths for various careers in music. 
  • Provide resources on major music education institutions and courses available. 
  1. Personal Development Plan 
  • Guide students to identify specific skills they need to develop and educational goals. 
  • Help them set realistic, measurable goals for the next 5 years. 
  1. Group Sharing 
  • Facilitate a session where students share their career maps and receive feedback from peers and the teacher. 
  1. Exit Ticket: 
  • Students list steps they plan to take in the next year towards achieving their career goals.
